About this tool
Enter teaspoons to get tablespoons, or tablespoons to get teaspoons. In the US, UK and most recipes, 1 tablespoon equals exactly 3 teaspoons, so you divide teaspoons by 3 to get tablespoons. The tool runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.
How to use it
Type a number in either box. The other box updates as you type, and fractions are shown as decimals, so 1 tsp appears as 0.3333 tbsp. If you need to go up to cups, use the tablespoons to cups converter, and for milliliters use the oz to ml converter.
How to convert tsp to tbsp by hand
Divide the teaspoons by 3. Six teaspoons is 2 tablespoons, and nine teaspoons is 3. When the number does not divide evenly, the remainder is teaspoons: 7 tsp is 2 tbsp and 1 tsp.

Related kitchen measures
One US tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, about 14.79 ml, and one US teaspoon is about 4.93 ml. Sixteen tablespoons make one cup, so 48 teaspoons make a cup too. Many recipes round the teaspoon to 5 ml and the tablespoon to 15 ml, which is fine for cooking but can matter for baking.
Where people need tsp to tbsp
- Scaling recipes: doubling 2 tsp of baking powder is 4 tsp, which is 1 tbsp and 1 tsp.
- Missing measuring spoons: if the tablespoon is missing, use three teaspoons instead.
- Supplements and medicine: some labels use spoons, though a measuring syringe or cup is safer than kitchen spoons.
- Spices and sweeteners: small amounts are listed in teaspoons, larger ones in tablespoons.
Things to watch out for
The 3-to-1 ratio holds for US and UK tablespoons, but an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml, which is 4 teaspoons of 5 ml. If the recipe comes from Australia, use 4 as the divisor. Also watch the abbreviations: lowercase "tsp" is the teaspoon and "tbsp" is the tablespoon, and a capital "T" for tablespoon is easy to misread.
