How zodiac compatibility works in astrology
Western astrology sorts the twelve signs into four elements of three signs each: Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). The grouping, known as the triplicities, goes back to Hellenistic astrology, which borrowed the four elements of Greek natural philosophy and laid them around the zodiac in a repeating Fire, Earth, Air, Water sequence.
Comparing elements is the oldest and simplest way astrologers judge how two signs get along. The tradition treats Fire and Air as active, outward-facing elements, and Earth and Water as receptive, inward-facing ones. Signs of the same element, or of two elements on the same side of that divide, are said to understand each other easily. Pairings that cross the divide are said to need more translation.
What this checker calculates
The checker looks up the element of each sign you pick and returns a fixed score and description for that pair of elements. There are ten possible element pairs, and every combination of signs maps onto one of them:
- Fire + Air: 90%
- Earth + Water: 88%
- Water + Water: 82%
- Fire + Fire: 80%
- Earth + Earth: 78%
- Air + Air: 75%
- Fire + Earth: 55%
- Earth + Air: 50%
- Air + Water: 48%
- Fire + Water: 45%
The ranking follows the tradition: complementary elements at the top, same-element pairs close behind, and pairs that cross the active/receptive divide lower down. The exact percentages are this tool's own way of expressing that ranking, since astrology has no official numeric scale. Because only the elements count, the order in which you choose the signs never changes the result, and all three Fire signs score the same against Libra.
Worked example
Choose Leo and Libra. Leo is a Fire sign and Libra an Air sign, so the checker returns the Fire + Air pairing at 90%, with the note that Air feeds Fire's energy and Fire gives Air direction. Swap Libra for Cancer, a Water sign, and the same Leo drops to 45%, the Fire + Water pairing the tradition describes as either steam or a doused flame. Taurus with Cancer gives Earth + Water at 88%, and two Scorpios (Water + Water) score 82%.
What the zodiac wheel says about the result
Because the elements repeat in order around the zodiac, element compatibility is really a statement about how far apart two signs sit on the wheel. Astrologers call these angles aspects:
- Four signs apart (a trine): always the same element, such as Aries and Leo.
- Two or six signs apart (a sextile or an opposition): always complementary elements, such as Aries and Gemini, or Aries and Libra. That is why opposite signs score highly here, even though "opposites" sounds like a poor match.
- One, three or five signs apart: always one of the lower-scoring pairs. Neighboring signs, like Aries and Taurus, never share an element or sit on the same side of the divide.
A low score isn't the tradition's final word, either. Many astrologers describe the square (three signs apart) as a source of friction that pushes both people to grow, and consider it a livelier combination than an easy trine.
What a full compatibility reading adds
Professional astrologers compare two complete birth charts, a practice called synastry. Besides the Sun, they look at each person's Moon sign, rising sign, Venus and Mars, and the angles those placements form with each other. Sun-sign elements are the headline, not the whole story, which is why two couples with the same 90% pairing can have nothing else in common. This checker deliberately stays at the headline level so it works with nothing more than two signs. If you only know birthdays, the Zodiac Sign Finder will give you each sign first.
Common misconceptions
- "Incompatible signs shouldn't date." Nothing in the tradition forbids a pairing, and there is no reliable evidence that sun signs predict whether a relationship works.
- "The same sign means a perfect match." Same-element pairs score well, but astrologers also warn that they can amplify each other's blind spots, which is why they sit just below the complementary pairs here.
- "The percentage is a probability." It's a label for a traditional category, not a measured likelihood of anything.
Limits of this tool
It ignores modality (cardinal, fixed and mutable signs), birth charts, and everything about the actual people involved. Use it as a conversation starter or a quick way to learn how the elements fit together, not as relationship advice. For a number-based take on the same question, try the Numerology Couple Match.
Frequently asked questions
It reflects the traditional pairing between the two signs' elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) in Western astrology. It's a symbolic score for entertainment, not a scientific measurement of relationship compatibility.
No. The score depends only on the two elements, so Leo and Libra gives the same result as Libra and Leo.
Same-element pairs score well, between 75% and 82%, because they share an outlook. The tradition ranks the complementary pairs (Fire with Air, Earth with Water) slightly higher because each element supplies something the other lacks.
Opposite signs, such as Aries and Libra or Taurus and Scorpio, always belong to complementary elements, so they land in the top two pairings. Astrologers describe an opposition as the attraction between two ends of the same axis.
No. It compares sun signs only. A full astrological comparison, called synastry, needs both people's birth dates, times and places.
