About this tool
A normal year has 52 weeks and 1 day, which is 52.14 weeks, because 365 divided by 7 is 52 with 1 left over. A leap year has 366 days, so it is 52 weeks and 2 days, or 52.29 weeks. The answer most people want is simply 52. This page also shows how many weeks have passed this year and how many remain, and it checks any year you type for its ISO week count.
How to use it
The box at the top starts on the current year. Change it to any year from 1 to 9999 to see its total days, weeks and extra days, its ISO week count and the weekday it starts on. Below the box, the live line shows the current ISO week number, weeks completed and weeks left, taken from your device date.
Why some years have 53 weeks
The ISO 8601 standard, used for business calendars and in much of Europe, starts weeks on Monday and says week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year. Because of the leftover day or two, a year occasionally ends up with 53 such weeks. That happens when the year starts on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year starting on a Wednesday. Recent examples are 2020 and 2026, and the next is 2032. Every other year in between, from 2021 to 2025 and from 2027 to 2031, has 52.

Common uses
- Pay and budgeting: weekly pay times 52 gives annual pay in most years, but a biweekly schedule can have 27 paydays in some years.
- Project plans and sprints: planners count from ISO week 1, and a 53-week year adds an extra week to the plan.
- Pregnancy, fitness and study schedules: a 12-week or 52-week plan lines up with the calendar only roughly.
- Retail and logistics: many companies report by week number, so knowing the year has 53 weeks matters for year-on-year comparisons.
Things to watch out for
Different tools number weeks differently. US calendars often start weeks on Sunday and call the week containing January 1 week 1, while ISO starts on Monday, so the same date can fall in different week numbers. The first days of January can also belong to the last ISO week of the previous year, and the last days of December can belong to week 1 of the next. Always check which system your employer, school or software uses.
