About this slug generator
A slug is the readable last part of a web address, such as easy-ways-to-save-money in example.com/blog/easy-ways-to-save-money. This slug generator turns a title or headline into a clean, URL-safe slug in one step. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded.
What the tool does to your text
- Removes accents. Letters such as é, ü and ñ become e, u and n, and characters like ß, æ and ø are replaced by their usual Latin spelling (ss, ae, o).
- Lowercases. Mixed-case URLs can be treated as different addresses on some servers, so lowercase is the safe default.
- Drops punctuation and symbols. Apostrophes vanish without leaving a gap (
don'tbecomesdont), and other marks become the separator. - Joins words with a hyphen or an underscore. Search engines read hyphens as word breaks, which is why hyphens are the default for web pages. Underscores suit file names and some code identifiers.
- Collapses repeats. Several spaces or symbols in a row become one separator, and none are left at the start or end.
Options
Remove stop words deletes short filler words such as the, of and and to shorten the slug. If every word would be removed, the tool keeps the full text instead of giving you an empty slug. Max length cuts the slug at a whole word at or under the number you choose, which helps when a platform limits address length. The & into and option writes the ampersand as the word "and" so it is not lost.
Example
The title 10 Easy Ways to Save Money on Groceries in 2027! becomes 10-easy-ways-to-save-money-on-groceries-in-2027. With stop words removed it becomes 10-easy-ways-save-money-groceries-2027.
Limits
- Letters outside the Latin alphabet, such as Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic or Chinese characters, are removed rather than transliterated. A title that is entirely in such a script gives an empty slug.
- Stop-word removal uses a fixed English list. It does not understand other languages.
- A slug is only part of a good address. Short, descriptive slugs that match the page topic are the aim, and once a page is published, changing its slug needs a redirect from the old address.
To tidy the text before you convert it, use the case converter, and to encode a full address safely use the URL encoder.
Frequently asked questions
A slug is the human-readable part of a page address that identifies the page, for example the last segment after the final slash. It is usually made of lowercase words joined by hyphens.
Use hyphens for web pages. Search engines treat a hyphen as a word separator, while an underscore can be read as joining words together. Underscores are fine for file names and code.
Yes. Accented letters are converted to plain letters, so café becomes cafe, and characters such as ß and ø are replaced with their Latin spelling.
It is optional. Shorter slugs are easier to read and share, but removing words can change the meaning, so check the result. Keep them if the slug reads better with them.
Latin letters with accents are handled. Letters from other scripts such as Cyrillic or Chinese are dropped, so those titles need a manual slug or a transliteration step first.
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
