About this tool
The Random Team Generator splits a list of names into teams or groups at random. It uses your browser's secure random source, keeps team sizes balanced, and never sends your list anywhere.
How to make random teams
- Paste your names, one per line.
- Choose how to split. Pick the number of teams you want, or the number of people per team.
- Press Generate teams. Press it again for a fresh split.
- Copy the result to paste into a chat, document or class slide.
How the teams are formed
The list is shuffled with the Fisher–Yates method using crypto.getRandomValues, then names are dealt out to the teams one at a time, like cards. That keeps teams balanced: team sizes never differ by more than one person. When the list does not divide evenly, a few teams get one extra member. For example, 10 people in 3 teams makes teams of 4, 3 and 3.
Common uses
- Splitting a class into groups for an activity
- Picking sides for a game, sports session or pub quiz
- Forming project groups, workshop tables or study groups
- Dividing a family or office into teams for a party game
Things to watch out for
This is a purely random split, so it does not balance skill, friendships or experience. If you need balanced ability, split the strongest players into a separate list first, generate teams from each list, and join them. A name typed twice is treated as two people. If you need to pick one winner from a list instead, use the Random Name Picker.
