About this tool
The Online Voice Recorder captures audio from your microphone using your browser's built-in recording support. The audio stays in your device's memory until you download it. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and closing the tab discards anything you did not save.
How to record your voice
- Press Record and click Allow when the browser asks for microphone access.
- Speak. The bar under the timer moves with your voice, so you can see the mic is working.
- Pause or stop when you are done. Pausing keeps everything in one recording.
- Play it back and download it as WAV, or in the browser's own format for a smaller file.
Which format should I download?
WAV is uncompressed and opens in almost any editor, but the files are large (roughly 10 MB per minute for stereo, less for mono). The original download is whatever your browser records, usually WebM or OGG on Chrome and Firefox and MP4 on Safari. It is much smaller, and fine for voice notes and sharing.
Things to watch out for
Browsers only allow recording on secure (HTTPS) pages and only after you grant permission. If the level bar does not move, check that the right microphone is selected in your browser or system sound settings and that no other app is using it. Keep the tab open while recording: long recordings are held in memory, and some phones stop recording when the screen locks. For a quick check of your setup, record a few seconds and play it back before the real take.
Frequently asked questions
No. The recording is made and kept in your browser. It is never sent to a server, and it disappears when you close or refresh the page unless you download it.
Browsers require your explicit permission before any page can use the microphone. You can revoke it at any time in the site settings of your browser.
There is no time limit in the tool. The practical limit is your device's available memory. A voice recording uses very little, but WAV downloads of long recordings are large.
Browsers do not record MP3 directly. WAV works everywhere and the original download is compact. You can convert either to MP3 in any audio editor.
Make sure the correct microphone is selected in your browser or operating system, that it is not muted, and that no other application is using it. Then reload the page and try again.
