About this tool
Enter a speed, choose its unit, and see it in miles per hour, kilometers per hour, knots, meters per second and feet per second at once. The most common use is converting mph to km/h (and back) for driving abroad, but the same tool handles knots for wind and boat speeds. Every conversion uses exact definitions, and everything runs in your browser.
How to use it
Type the number, pick the unit it is in, and read the other four values below. Decimals work, so 62.5 mph is fine. The first two lines show mph and km/h because that pair is searched most often, with knots, m/s and ft/s underneath.
How to convert mph to km/h by hand
Multiply miles per hour by 1.609344. For a quick estimate, add half and a tenth: 60 mph is 60 + 30 + 6 = 96, and the exact answer is 96.56 km/h. To go from km/h to mph, multiply by 0.621371, or take 60% of the number and add a little more.

Knots to mph and km/h
A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is exactly 1,852 meters. That makes 1 knot equal to 1.15078 mph or 1.852 km/h. Knots are used for ships, aircraft and wind speeds, so weather reports at sea and airspeed in aviation are often quoted this way.
| Knots | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 knots | 1.2 mph / 1.9 km/h |
| 5 knots | 5.8 mph / 9.3 km/h |
| 10 knots | 11.5 mph / 18.5 km/h |
| 15 knots | 17.3 mph / 27.8 km/h |
| 20 knots | 23.0 mph / 37.0 km/h |
| 30 knots | 34.5 mph / 55.6 km/h |
| 50 knots | 57.5 mph / 92.6 km/h |
| 100 knots | 115.1 mph / 185.2 km/h |
Where people need speed conversions
- Driving abroad: US speed limits are in mph, while Canada, Europe and most countries use km/h. The UK also uses mph on its road signs.
- Boating and aviation: charts, forecasts and airspeed indicators use knots.
- Sports and fitness: treadmill, cycling and running speeds switch between mph and km/h by region.
- Science and engineering: physics problems use meters per second as the base unit.
Things to watch out for
Do not confuse a knot with an mph: 100 knots is 115 mph, not 100. A mile per hour is slower than a kilometer per hour in number terms but the speed is the same, so 100 km/h is only 62 mph. Also check which kind of mile a source means, because the international mile (1.609344 km) differs from the nautical mile (1.852 km).
Frequently asked questions
Multiply miles per hour by 1.609344. For example, 60 mph is 96.56 km/h. A quick estimate is to add half and a tenth of the mph figure.
100 km/h is 62.14 mph. Divide km/h by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.621371.
1 knot is 1.15078 mph and exactly 1.852 km/h, because a knot is one nautical mile per hour.
