About this tool
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin text, adapted from a passage of Cicero's philosophical work De finibus bonorum et malorum (45 BC), that designers and developers use to preview layouts without being distracted by readable content.
How to use the Lorem Ipsum Generator
- Choose a unit — paragraphs, sentences, or words.
- Set the amount you need, up to 50.
- Click Generate and copy the result into your mockup or document.
Common use cases
- Filling a design mockup or wireframe with realistic-looking body text
- Testing how a layout handles long vs. short paragraphs
- Populating a CMS template during development before real content is ready
Worked example
Building a card-based layout with a headline, a short description, and a byline? Generate a handful of short sentences for the headline field, a full paragraph for the description, and a single short phrase for the byline — testing each field with placeholder text roughly matching its expected real-world length is far more useful for catching layout bugs than filling every field with the same block of text, since a description field that wraps to three lines with realistic content might overflow its container if tested only with a single short line.
Things to watch out for
Lorem Ipsum is deliberately meaningless Latin-derived text, which is exactly the point — it lets reviewers judge layout and typography without getting distracted by (or unconsciously reacting to) actual message content. That said, it's worth swapping in a little real or realistic-length copy before final client review or user testing, since genuine content sometimes reveals sizing issues placeholder text doesn't — a long product name or a translated string in another language can run noticeably longer or shorter than a lorem ipsum block of similar length. If your project involves internationalization specifically, it's worth stress-testing layouts with a language known for longer average word length (German compound words are a classic example) rather than relying on Latin-derived lorem ipsum text alone, since it tends to run shorter than several real-world languages at equivalent meaning.
Where the words come from
Lorem ipsum is scrambled from a passage of De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”), a work of philosophy that the Roman writer Cicero finished in 45 BC. The original, in Book 1, sections 32 and 33, begins Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, roughly “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain.” The familiar opening lorem is the tail end of dolorem, split mid-word. Many placeholder words are real Latin, such as dolor (pain) and labore (work), but the order is shuffled and the sentences mean nothing.
How this generator builds its text
The generator uses a vocabulary of 63 different words from the classic passage and picks each word at random, so every click gives new text:
- A sentence is 6 to 15 random words, starting with a capital letter and ending with a period.
- A paragraph is 4 to 7 sentences.
- Words mode returns that many random words with no punctuation or capitals.
So an average sentence has 10.5 words and an average paragraph about 57.75 words (5.5 sentences × 10.5). Individual paragraphs range from 24 words (4 × 6) to 105 words (7 × 15). Unlike some generators, the output does not always start with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”. If a client expects that line, paste it in as the first words yourself.
How much lorem ipsum do I need?
Average amounts from this generator to reach a target word count. Real results vary because lengths are random, so check the total with the Word Counter if the count matters.
| Target length | Paragraphs (average) | Sentences (average) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 words | 1.7 | 10 |
| 250 words | 4.3 | 24 |
| 500 words | 8.7 | 48 |
| 1,000 words | 17.3 | 95 |
The amount box goes up to 50, so the largest single batch is 50 paragraphs, or roughly 2,900 words on average.
Tips for realistic mockups
- Use Words mode for buttons, labels and headlines, and Sentences for card descriptions, so each field is tested at a length close to the real one.
- The longest word in the vocabulary, reprehenderit, has 13 letters, so it will not reveal how a narrow column handles a long product name or URL. Test at least one real worst-case string too.
- Placeholder text is easy to miss before launch. Search the finished site for “lorem” before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
Because it is scrambled Latin — adapted from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, mixing real Latin words with cut-off fragments like “lorem” (from “dolorem”) — it looks like natural text without forming meaningful sentences, which lets viewers judge layout, spacing, and typography without getting distracted by trying to read the content.
Up to 50 paragraphs, sentences, or words per generation — enough for most mockups. Generate multiple times and combine the results if you need more.
Lorem Ipsum is meant purely as placeholder text for design and layout purposes. Replace it with real content before publishing.
It does not mean anything as a whole. Lorem ipsum is shuffled Latin taken from a passage by Cicero written in 45 BC. Some words are real Latin, such as dolor, meaning pain, but lorem itself is only a fragment of the word dolorem, and the placeholder sentences are not grammatical Latin.
It depends on the generator. Here a paragraph is 4 to 7 random sentences of 6 to 15 words each, so it runs from 24 to 105 words and averages about 58. For roughly 500 words, generate 9 paragraphs and check the total with a word counter.
This generator picks every word at random from its vocabulary, including the first one, so each batch starts differently. That gives more varied text for testing layouts. If you want the traditional opening, type Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet at the start of the first paragraph after you paste it.
