How to use it

Put the feet in the first box and the leftover inches in the second. For a plain length like 12.5 feet, enter 12.5 in the feet box and leave inches at 0. If you start from centimeters and want a height in feet and inches, the cm to feet and inches converter goes into more detail.

How to convert feet to cm by hand

Multiply feet by 30.48, then add 2.54 for every extra inch. For 5 ft 10 in, that is 5 times 30.48 (152.4) plus 10 times 2.54 (25.4), which is 177.8 cm. Another way is to turn everything into inches first (70) and multiply by 2.54.

Where people need feet to cm

• Height on forms: medical, visa and sports forms outside the US ask for centimeters.
• Dating and social profiles: international profiles often show height in one unit only.
• Furniture, rooms and construction: US floor plans use feet and inches, while suppliers elsewhere use cm or mm.

Things to watch out for

Write heights as feet and inches, not as a decimal. 5.10 ft is not 5 ft 10 in: 5 ft 10 in is 5.83 feet, and 5.10 feet is only 5 ft 1.2 in. Also note that 1 foot is 12 inches, so a value above 11 in the inches box should be carried into feet. Rounding to the nearest centimeter is normal for height, but keep the decimals for woodwork or machining.
