EST to IST and IST to EST chart
India keeps the same clock all year while New York changes twice, so every row has a winter answer and a summer answer. Times in India always end in :30 when you convert from a whole hour in New York, and the reverse is also true. Office hours in the source zone are in bold.

About this tool
This converter moves between US Eastern Time and India Standard Time (IST), in both directions. Here IST means India Standard Time, UTC+05:30, not Irish or Israel Standard Time. The tool opens at 9:00 AM Eastern on today's date, works out whether New York is on EST or EDT that day, and shows the matching time in India together with live clocks for both places. A printable 24-hour chart for each direction is below.
How to convert EST to IST here
- Select the direction: Eastern to India, or India to Eastern.
- Enter a date and time. The date decides whether the gap is 10 hours 30 minutes or 9 hours 30 minutes.
- Look at the result, which marks
+1 dayor-1 daywhenever the date changes, which happens often with this pair. - Press Use current time to see what time it is in India right now, or copy the result for a calendar invite.
Why the gap is 10:30 in winter and 9:30 in summer
India uses a single zone for the whole country, represented in the IANA time zone database by Asia/Kolkata, at UTC+05:30, and it does not observe daylight saving time; the database lists no clock changes for it in 2026 or 2027. The half-hour offset is why conversions from New York land on :30.
New York, on the other hand, is on EST (UTC-05:00) from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March, and on EDT (UTC-04:00) in between, under the US federal rule described by NIST. Subtract the offsets and you get:
- US winter: 5:30 minus (minus 5:00) = India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead.
- US summer: 5:30 minus (minus 4:00) = India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead.
Only the US side moves, so in March and November recurring calls shift by an hour for the team in India, not for the team in New York. In 2026 those changes fall on March 8 and November 1; in 2027 on March 14 and November 7.
Worked example: 9 AM in New York
With the default input of 9:00 AM Eastern, a date between March and November gives 9:00 AM EDT = 6:30 PM IST, and the detail line says India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of Eastern Time on this date, with offsets UTC-04:00 and UTC+05:30. A winter date gives 9:00 AM EST = 7:30 PM IST and a gap of 10 hours 30 minutes. Switch to India to Eastern and enter 10:00 AM: in January that is 11:30 PM EST the previous day, while in July it is 12:30 AM EDT on the same day.
Finding a time that works for both teams
With a standard 9-to-5 day on both sides there is no shared office hour, so one side has to stretch. The two usual windows are:
- US morning, India evening. 8:00 AM EDT is 5:30 PM IST; in winter 8:00 AM EST is 6:30 PM IST.
- US evening, India morning. 9:30 PM EDT is 7:00 AM IST the next day; in winter the same 7:00 AM IST is 8:30 PM EST.
To compare more than two locations, such as New York, London and Bengaluru, use the meeting planner in the Time Zone Converter, which shades the working hours for each zone.
Common mistakes
- Using a whole number of hours. India's offset includes 30 minutes, so 9 or 10 hours is always wrong by half an hour.
- Keeping the same gap all year. It changes by an hour in March and November, because New York switches and India does not.
- Reading IST as Irish or Israel Standard Time in software. Store
Asia/Kolkatarather than the abbreviation. - Ignoring the date: an India-time meeting on Monday morning is still Sunday night in New York.
Use cases
Distributed teams with members in the US East Coast and in India, support handovers between the two, family calls, and checking when an India-time exam, webinar or cricket broadcast starts in New York. Related converters: UTC to EST, GMT to EST and CST to EST.
Frequently asked questions
9:00 AM EST is 7:30 PM IST on the same day. If New York is on daylight time, 9:00 AM EDT is 6:30 PM IST. India does not change its clocks, so the difference depends only on whether the US is on standard or daylight time.
10:00 AM IST is 11:30 PM EST on the previous day during the US winter. During US daylight time it is 12:30 AM EDT on the same calendar day. A morning meeting in India therefore lands around midnight in New York.
India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York from early November to mid-March, and 9 hours 30 minutes ahead from mid-March to early November. The half hour comes from India Standard Time being UTC+5:30.
No. India stays on India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, all year, and the time zone database lists no clock changes for it. Any shift in the US-India gap during the year comes from the US moving its clocks.
8:00 PM EST is 6:30 AM IST the next morning. In summer, 8:00 PM EDT is 5:30 AM IST the next morning. US evening calls are therefore early-morning calls for colleagues in India.
No. The same three letters are also used for Irish Standard Time, the Irish summer time, and Israel Standard Time. On this page IST means India Standard Time, UTC+5:30. When scheduling across countries, write the city or the UTC offset to avoid confusion.
