The question what grade do I need on my final has one answer if your class weights categories by percentage and a different answer if it totals points — and the gap between the two can be several points. The arithmetic is short either way. Once you have seen it run, you can do it on the back of an envelope faster than you can find a calculator, and you will know which of the two systems your class uses, which is where the confusion starts.
The caveat belongs up front: your syllabus is the authority here, not any calculator, including this site's. Every formula below depends on knowing exactly how your instructor weights and rounds things, and syllabi are vaguer about that than they look.
What grade do I need on my final: the formula
For a class that weights categories by percentage:
required final = (target - current x (1 - final weight)) / final weight
Three inputs you should already have:
- target — the overall course percentage you are aiming at.
- current — your average across everything graded so far, weighted by category.
- final weight — the final's share of the course grade as a decimal. A final worth 40% is 0.40.
The middle term does the work. current x (1 - final weight) turns your average so far into points already banked toward the 100 that make up the course grade. Subtract those from the target to get the points still outstanding, then divide by the final's weight.
A worked example, step by step
Say the syllabus reads: homework 20%, quizzes 15%, midterm 25%, final 40%. You have 92% in homework, 85% in quizzes, and a 78% midterm. You want a 90% overall.
Step 1 — current average. Multiply each score by its weight, then divide by the weight graded so far: (92 x 20 + 85 x 15 + 78 x 25) / 60 = (1840 + 1275 + 1950) / 60 = 5065 / 60 = 84.42%.
Step 2 — points banked. 84.42 x (1 - 0.40) = 84.42 x 0.60 = 50.65. Of the 100 points that make up your course grade, 50.65 are already locked in.
Step 3 — divide. (90 - 50.65) / 0.40 = 39.35 / 0.40 = 98.4%.
A 90 in the course needs a 98.4 on the final. Change only the target and the same three steps give you 73.4% for an 80 overall, and 105.9% for a 93 — the formula telling you that A is gone.
A shortcut for step 2: you never actually need the percentage from step 1. That weighted sum divided by 100 gives the banked points directly — 5065 / 100 = 50.65. The average is worth knowing, but it is not what the formula consumes.

Points-based classes work differently
A points-based class has no category weights. Every assignment is worth a fixed number of points, your grade is points earned over points possible, and the final is just a bigger chunk of points. The question becomes: how many points do I still need?

Take the same student in a points class: homework 200 points, quizzes 100, midterm 100, final 200, for 600 possible. The same percentages give 184 points on homework, 85 on quizzes, 78 on the midterm — 347 earned out of the 400 graded so far, or 86.75%.
For a 90% overall you need 0.90 x 600 = 540 points. You have 347, so you need 540 - 347 = 193 of the final's 200 points, which is 96.5%.
Same scores, same target, different answer: 98.4% weighted, 96.5% points-based. Nothing went wrong in either. The final is 40% of the grade in the first and 200 of 600 — 33.3% — in the second, and the midterm that dragged the average down carries less weight in the points version. The structure of the class moved the answer, not the student.
Weighted vs points-based, side by side
Most syllabi say which system they use, if not in those words. Categories with percentages beside them mean weighted. Assignments with point values, or a total-points line for the course, mean points-based.

When the answer comes back over 100
A required score above 100% means the target is out of reach on the final alone. That is not a rounding artifact or a broken calculator. Read it precisely rather than as bad news: the number tells you the size of the gap.
In the worked example a 93 required 105.9 on the final. Read it this way: a perfect 100 adds the full 40 points of the final's weight, so the highest course grade still available is 50.65 + 40 = 90.65%. You are 2.35 percentage points short of a 93, and no score on the final closes it.
That 2.35 is the useful figure. It is what you bring to a question about extra credit, a grade-replacement policy, or a rounding decision at the boundary — all conversations with an instructor rather than a calculator, and all more actionable than the word impossible. Why the calculator and your actual grade can still differ
The formula is arithmetic and the arithmetic is correct. The inputs are what is uncertain, and that is where wrong answers come from:
- Rounding policy varies by instructor. Some round 89.5 up to an A-, some round at 89.95, some do not round at all. On a borderline that decision matters more than the calculation does.
- Dropped scores. Plenty of classes drop the lowest quiz or homework grade. If yours does, your true current average is not what the gradebook shows today, and the formula will read pessimistic.
- Weights that are not what they look like. A syllabus listing participation at 10% may fold it into another category in practice, and weights sometimes stop adding to 100 once extra credit exists.
- Curves and grade replacement. A curve applied after the final, or a policy where a strong final replaces a weak midterm, changes the whole calculation and is invisible to any calculator.
- Letter-grade cutoffs. Use the cutoff printed on your syllabus, not the one you assume. A 90 is an A- under some schemes and a flat A under others.
For anything that lands on a transcript, the syllabus is the authority and your instructor is the tiebreaker. A calculator gets you oriented in thirty seconds. It is not a source to quote back to anyone, and it does not know about the policy in paragraph four that changes the answer.

If your class needs a 60 to pass, you are at 84.42% with a final worth 40%, then (60 - 50.65) / 0.40 = 23.4%, so almost any score passes. Check your syllabus for the actual passing cutoff, since it varies by course and program.
Multiply each category score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total weight. It means the target is out of reach on the final alone. Usually because of a policy the calculator cannot see. Dropped lowest scores, a curve applied after the final, extra credit that pushes category weights past 100, a grade-replacement rule, or a different rounding threshold will all shift the result.
